Freshman QB Elijah Shemory completes 10 of 15 passes for 169 yards in great comeback game.
Senior WR John Kim pulls in a pass from Shemory for good yardage. |
CHESTER, Pa. – Both juniors Jacob Fimbres (La Habra, Calif./Sonora) and Keith Batkowski (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) ran for 100 yards a piece and junior Jamie Fisher (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) set a school-record with four field goals, as the Lycoming College football team allowed just 193 yards of total offense to Widener University to notch a 33-19 non-conference win at Jamie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 8.
Giving up just 11 first downs to the Pride (0-2 overall), who posted 449 yards, including 212 rushing last week against Rowan, were held to just 34 yards rushing and 14-of-25 passing for 159 yards, as Lycoming’s defense needed to be on the field for just 21:26 in the contest.
Lycoming's running attack was as good as it has been against Widener. |
Fimbres rushed 23 times for 117 yards and Batkowski rushed 28 times for 101 yards and a touchdown, as the pair became the first Warrior pair to eclipse 100 yards rushing in the same game since Craig Needhammer and Blake Bowman did it at Misericordia in 2014.
Fisher, meanwhile, became the first Warrior to kick four field goals in a game, connecting from 39 and 26 yards in the second quarter, 43 yards in the third and 23 in the fourth. He also added three extra points, to give him 15 points kicking, tying a school-record set by Rusty Fricke at Lebanon Valley in 1985.
Lycoming posted four sacks in the game and added six tackles for loss, as the defense was able to control tempo throughout, as it held Widener to 34 rushing yards, the fewest since King’s had 32 in 2014. Junior Zach Kovach (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) posted seven tackles, 1.5 for loss and a sack and senior Ahmad Curtis (Effort, Pa./Pleasant Valley) added six stops, 1.5 for loss and a sack. Both sophomore Andre Jackson Jr. (Paterson, N.J./Hawthorne) and freshman Willie Garner (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) each had a sack. Senior Jarrell Payne (Jersey City, N.J./Liberty) had an interception and three tackles and senior D.J. Boyd (District Heights, Md./Fairmount Heights) had two breakups.
After the first five drives of the game for both teams were fruitless, the Warriors scored on six of their next seven drives to take control of the game. Lycoming got on the board in the second quarter, moving 63 yards on 12 plays, converting four third-down plays in the drive before Batkowski leapt into the end zone from two yards out. Widener used two pass plays of more than 13 yards to tie the score with 10:15 left in the second half.
Fimbres broke through the line on the first play of the next drive, rushing for 49 yards and setting upa 39-yard field goal from Fisher. After a Widener 3-and-out, the Warriors used a 37-yard pass from Shemory to senior Brock Zollicoffer (Baltimore, Md./Owings Mills) to set up a 26-yard field goal from Fisher.
On the ensuing drive, Widener was forced into 3-and-10 from their 18, where Payne picked off a pass and returned it to the seven. Three plays later, Shemory snuck into the end zone to make it 20-7, where the game went into halftime.
Lycoming scored first again in the third quarter, with a 40-yard pass to Zollicoffer setting up a 43-yard field goal from Fisher, the second-longest kick of his career. James Gillepsie made it 23-13 with a 95-yard kickoff return in response, but Lycoming answered with an eight-play, 80-yard drive, with Shemory finding senior Nick Costello (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) for a 37-yard touchdown on a perfect fly pattern to cap the drive.
After a big kickoff return, the Pride scored on a nine-play drive, making it 30-19 entering the fourth quarter, where the Warriors didn’t allow a first down as Widener managed just eight plays. Lycoming, meanwhile, continued to rush the ball, 20 times in all in the quarter, eating 12:34 of the game clock. Fisher rounded out the scoring with a 23-yard field goal with 5:56 on the clock with his record-breaking fourth trifecta of the game.
Zollicoffer caught four passes for 102 yards, Costello caught three for 47 and senior John Kim (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) added three catches for 20 yards.
Sean McGaughey finished 14-of-25 for 159 yards and two touchdowns for Widener. Chris Randle rushed 13 times for 37 yards and Pat Downey caught five passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. Eric Riley led the defense with 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 for loss. Jordan Powell posted nine tackles and two breakups.
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host Lebanon Valley at 1 p.m. in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener at David Person Field.
