Mitch Rupert on Lycoming football: Clark striving for success

A LycomingFootball.com Photo.
Williamsport, PA - Nobody knows better than Lycoming head coach Mike Clark about the struggles the Warriors' football team has endured this year. He strives for much better than the 2-5 record they hold.

He strives for more because he played in the hey day of Lycoming football under legendary head coach Frank Girardi. Clark strives for more because he understands the expectations which come with playing and coaching football at Lycoming College.

Things aren't perfect. They're far from it in fact. And Clark understands the frustration of the fans. Now in his eighth season as the Warriors' head coach, he's used to getting emails from fans voicing both praise and concern for the course of the football team.

Some of those comments have gotten to the head coach this year. There's likely nobody who wants success for the football program more than Clark. His job is tied directly to the results of the football team.

2013 Lycoming Football - Head Coach Mike Clark

Since stepping foot on the Lycoming College campus in 1989, Mike Clark has done nothing but succeed.

In four years as an offensive lineman on the football team under legendary Coach Frank Girardi, he won four MAC titles and helped the team advance to the 1990 NCAA Division III National Championship game.

After graduating in 1993, he began his football coaching career and when it led him back to Williamsport in 1998, the success didn't stop. In two years as an offensive line coach for Girardi, he helped win two more MAC titles before moving on to become the offensive coordinator at Division I Davidson College.

Lycoming Football Coach Optimistic at 1st Kickoff Luncheon

Lyoming Head Football Coach Mike Clark
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Lycoming College head football coach Mike Clark previewed the 2013 football team during the first Lycoming College Kickoff Luncheon, which was held at the Ross Club, 201 W. 4th St., on Wednesday, July 31, at 12 p.m. Clark was joined by Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director Joe Guistina, assistant coach Pat Taylor and senior LB Tyler Denike, Sr.

Coach Clark spoke about how Lycoming Football has positioned itself for the MAC Championship year in and year out. "It is not an easy thing to do as the last two year indicate. One year we were seven points away and the other five points away. So we have come up a little bit short each of the last two year," Mike told the Lycoming fans. He praised retired coach Frank Girardi, Robb Curry and his coaches for putting Lycoming's program on the map. We won the championship in 2008 and everyone thought the next one would be just around the corner, but that has not happened. "The only saving grace is that Coach Girardi only won 13 Championships in 36 years, so one every three year is not bad," Clark quipped. Coach Clark is starting his 6th as head coach of Lycoming.
