ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Jamie Fisher (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) tied the school record for field goals in a season and junior Nick Costello (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) set a school-record with a 99-yard reception, but the Lycoming College football team fell to a hard-running Lebanon Valley squad, 20-17, on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Arnold Field.
The Flying Dutchmen (5-4 overall, 5-3 MAC) rushed for 266 yards on 55 carries, helping the team to 404 yards of total offense to outlast the Warriors (4-5 overall, 4-4 MAC), as they held the ball for more than 38 minutes in the game. Despite that, the Warriors racked up 311 yards of total offense, including 226 yards through the air from senior quarterback Chase Williams (Damascus, Md./Damascus).
Down 13-7 late in the third quarter, the Warriors forced a punt and drove 36 yards in nine plays, reaching the LVC 22-yard line, setting up a 39-yard field goal for Fisher, his 13th of the year to tie the record set by John Phillips in the 1990 season.
The Dutchmen responded with an eight-play, 61-yard drive that took 4:25 off the clock, scoring on a four-yard rush from Tyler Sterner with 8:14 left to make it 20-10 The Dutchmen threw the ball just once on the drive. Lycoming was forced into a four and out and Lebanon Valley responded with another four-minute drive that stalled at the Lycoming 42. The resulting punt was downed at the one-yard line with 3:39 left.
On the first play of the resulting drive, Williams found Costello down the sideline and Costello broke free for a 99-yard touchdown, the longest in program history and the first 99-yard offensive score in program history to make it 20-17.
After a first down by the Dutchmen, the Warriors got LVC to punt with 57 seconds left, sending the ball to the Lycoming 21. The Warriors completed four passes on the ensuing drive, getting to the 40-yard line, but a fourth-down pass with eight seconds left fell incomplete to end the threat.
The Dutchmen scored on the game’s first drive, with Tim Perrone finding Sterner for a 12-yard score with 7:23 left in the opening quarter. The Warriors drove to the LVC 32 before an interception ended the drive. Lycoming tied it on their next drive, though, going 51 yards on eight plays, with senior Sam Dressler (Riverside, Pa./Danville) leading the drive with six rushes for 27 and scoring from four yards out.
Lebanon Valley scored the next six points, with Marcus Brown hitting two 30-yard field goals, the second with 7:47 left in the second quarter to start Lycoming’s comeback effort.
Williams finished 18-of-31 for 226 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Costello caught four passes for 127 yards and a score, as he moved into eighth in school history with 1,479 career receiving yards. Sophomore Christoff Minott (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) caught three passes for 22 yards. Sophomore Dante Gipson (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) put together 157 all-purpose yards, 40 rushing, 22 receiving and 98 on kick returns. Dressler finished with 14 carries for 53 yards and a score.
Senior Mike Ward (Edgewater, Md./South River) led the defense with a career-high 15 tackles and added a breakup. He is now seventh in school history with 254 career tackles. FreshmanMatt Galasso (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) added eight stops, two for a loss and a sack and junior Sam Romanofsky (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) posted seven stops and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Zach Kovach (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) added 1.5 tackles for loss.
Jon Jones led the Dutchmen with 24 carries for 116 yards and Pirrone rushed eight times for 84 yards. Sterner finished 9-of-17 passing for 119 yards and a touchdown. Tommy Garner led the defense with eight tackles and a sack and Zachary Adams added an interception. Anthony Jenkins also had a fumble recovery.
The Warriors wrap up the 2017 season on Saturday, Nov. 11, when they head to Stevenson University for a 12 p.m. MAC tilt.
