Warriors announce incoming football class

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With two straight 8-2 seasons behind it, the Lycoming College football team has reloaded, welcoming 49 players as part of its 2013 recruiting class, which includes 11 players who earned all-state accolades, sixth-year head coach Mike Clark announced on Thursday, July 25.

Twenty-eight offensive players will be welcomed into camp, including two quarterbacks, six running backs, three fullbacks, a tight end, three wide receivers and 13 offensive linemen. On defense, the Warriors will welcome 21 players, including six defensive backs, nine defensive linemen and six linebackers.


The group includes 11 players who picked up all-state accolades from three different states during the 2012 season. Defensive back Zach Cooney (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) was a two-time First Team New York Sports Writers Class C All-State selection. Four players picked up Honorable Mention Big School All-State accolades in Maryland, including wide receiver Nick Ball (Ellicot City, Md./River Hill), linebacker Kevin Bettis (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), offensive linemanMichael Konrad (Gaithersburg, Md./Good Counsel) and quarterback Jackson Thornton(Reiserstown, Md./Franklin).

Two players earned mention on the Pennsylvania Sports Writers’ All-State teams, with running back Blake Bowman (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) earning Class A accolades and defensive back Cale Rice (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) taking Class AA honors.

Six players earned all-state mention from Pennsylvania Football News, with Bowman earning first-team Class A honors and Rice taking first-team Class AA honors to highlight the selections. Offensive lineman Austin Mital (Ginter, Pa./Moshannon Valley) was a second-team Class A selection and defensive lineman J.R. Rummell (Lykens, Pa./Williams Valley) was a third-team Class A pick. Offensive linemen Joe Smith (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and Joe Erzar(West Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) were honorable mention selections in Class AAA and AA, respectively.

The Warriors finished 8-2 overall and 8-1 in the MAC to finish second in the league under Clark in 2012.

The team begins its 2013 campaign at Brockport on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m.
