WIDENER’S MICHAEL BENNETT TABBED MAC FOOTBALL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK; KLEIN PICKED TO HONOR ROLL

Annville, PA – Widener freshman punter Michael Bennett (Maple Glen, PA/Ursinus College) was picked the Middle Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and freshman quarterback Seth Klein (Wernersville, PA/Wilson West Lawn) was named to the league’s honor roll.

Bennett had a huge impact early in Widener’s 31-10 victory Saturday at Stevenson.  On the Pride’s first drive, he boomed a 44-yard punt that went out of bounds at the Mustangs’ seven yard line.  That led to sophomore Stacey Sunnerville (Freehold, NJ) sacking quarterback John Gasparovic in the end zone on the next play for a first-quarter safety and a 2-0 Widener lead.

Bennett finished with four punts, averaging 39.2 yards per boot and landing two inside the 20 yard line. He is fourth in the conference with 37.2 yards per punt with 10 of his 29 boots placed inside the 20.

Klein had yet another sterling day by completing 27-of-33 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns. In the first half, he completed 20-of-22 passes for 225 yards to help the Pride open a 17-10 lead.

Klein, who entered the contest third in the country in completions per game and sixth in completion percentage, this season is first in the MAC with 280.6 passing yards per game, first with a .762 completing percentage, first with 266.0 yards of total offense per contest and tied for third with seven touchdown passes.

Widener (3-2, 3-1 MAC) sits tied for second in the MAC.  After a bye this week, the squad returns to Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on October 19 for Homecoming Weekend to face Misericordia.  Game time is 1:00 pm.
