Down 28-20 when they got the ball at their own 48-yard line after an 18-yard punt return by freshman John Kim (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) with 5:!4 left, the Warriors moved the ball down the field quickly, scoring in just five plays, as junior Blake Bowman(Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) broke the plane from nine yards out to make it a two-point game with 3:15 left. Junior quarterback Chase Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) crossed the goalline for the two-point conversation to tie the game.
Four plays later, freshman linebacker Wyatt Entz (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) forced Lebanon Valley quarterback Tim Pirrone to fumble at the Lycoming 46-yard line before picking it up at the LVC 47 and returning it for the go-ahead score with 1:49 left.
The Warriors (1-4 overall, 1-3 MAC) soon after forced LVC (2-3 overall, 2-2 MAC) into a 4-and-18 from the Lycoming 47, but Pirrone found Travis Saylor for a 38-yard reception to convert and three plays later, Pirrone found Kyle Ziminik in the end zone to tie the game with 25 seconds left. The extra point to tie the game caromed off the left goal post before falling through.
In overtime, the Warriors took the ball first and moved the ball four yards in three plays before sophomore Devon Flynn(Levittown, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) drilled a 38-yard line drive of a field goal. Lebanon Valley's overtime started with a roughing the passer penalty to move to the 12 yard line and five plays later, Tim Pirrone was able to cross the goalline from one-yard out to secure the win, avenging a 30-29 overtime loss to the Warriors in 2014.
Whiteman completed 12-of-26 passing for 143 yards on the wet day, as he was intercepted once and threw for one touchdown. He also ran 14 times for 82 yards and a score. Bowman complimented him with 17 carries for 98 yards and a score, as Lycoming rushed for 214 yards.
Senior Ryan Umpleby (Fallston, Md./Forest Hill) found the end zone twice for Lycoming, as he posted four catches for 55 yards and a score and three kickoff returns for 122 yards and a score. He became the 11th player in school history to cross 3,000 career all-purpose yards during the game.
Lebanon Valley's Pirrone finished 17-of-29 for 206 yards and four touchdowns. He was intercepted once and he fumbled once, but also scored a rushing touchdown. Brendon Irving ran 29 times for 117 yards and Travis Saylor notched five catches for 73 yards.
After stopping Lebanon Valley on its first possession, the Warriors fell victim to a fumble on the punt, giving the Dutchmen the ball on Lycoming's 11-yard line. Three plays later, Tim Pirrone found Gary Wise for an 11-yard touchdown reception in the corner of the end zone, giving LVC the early 7-0 lead.
The Warriors tied the game two drives later, getting the ball at the LVC 30 after an interception by senior Matt Malecki(Stevensville, Md./Kent Island). Three plays later, Whiteman scampered into the end zone from 10 yards out to tie the game. The Dutchmen responded immediately, using a drive that finished with six straight rushes to drive 72 yards and make it 14-7.
Lycoming tied the game on the next play, though, as Umpleby returned a kickoff 89 yards for a score, becoming the first Warrior to return a kick for a score since Parker Showers did it against Bridgewater in the 2009 season opener.
The Dutchmen took the lead back in the second quarter, using a 51-yard drive to score on a 23-yard pass from Pirrone to Irving with 9:31 left. Lycoming answered right before the half, with a late hit on Whiteman propelling a 68-yard drive that was capped on a 21-yard touchdown catch by Umpleby with 37 seconds left in the half. A blocked extra point kept LVC in the lead by a one-point margin.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Dutchmen tacked on another score in the fourth quarter after getting the ball at the Lycoming 32-yard line. Three plays later, Pirrone found Zimnik to make it 28-20 and set up the exciting finish.
Sophomore Mike Ward (Edgewater, Md./South River) led the Warrior defense with 10 tackles, one forced fumble and a pass breakup. Senior Josh Cook (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) notched seven stops and a sack and senior Cole Welham(Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area) posted 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Senior Phil Schron (Albrightsville, Pa./Marian Catholic) added nine tackles and Malecki finished with seven tackles, one interception and one breakup.
Kyle Murray led the Dutchmen with seven tackles. Trevor St. Clair posted five stops, two tackles for loss, one interception and one pass breakup.
The Warriors get back on the field after a bye week on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they head to King's (Pa.) for a 1 p.m. kickoff in the MAC game.
