WIDENER’S COUVE LaFATE’S NAMED MAC FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Couve LaFate
Annville, PA – Junior Couve LaFate (Wilmington, DE/Henderson) enjoyed a career day Saturday and it was more than enough for him to be selected Middle Atlantic Conference Football Offensive Player of the Week.

LaFate had a career-best 174 yards rushing on 19 carries with two touchdowns in Widener’s 52-20 rout of King’s.  His first touchdown was a 91-yard burst in the first quarter that gave the Pride a 14-0 lead and was Widener’s longest run since the legendary Billy “White Shoes” Johnson had a 93-yard scamper at Ursinus on October 28, 1972.

LaFate once again has put forth another strong campaign.  He is 11th in the MAC with 65.4 rushing yards per game, tied for 11th with five rushing touchdowns, tied for 16th with 5.7 yards per carry and 13th with 92 carries.  His 523 rushing yards so far this season already is a career best.

The Pride (6-3, 6-2 MAC) are tied for second in the MAC as they attempt to reach postseason for a third straight year.

Widener ends the regular season Saturday at Delaware Valley, starting at 1:00 pm in Doylestown, with plenty at stake.  The contest is for the Keystone Cup, which Widener holds a 24-8 edge in since the teams first began competing for it in 1981.  A win plus a Lebanon Valley loss at Albright gives Widener a share of the MAC title.  A win, a Lebanon Valley loss and a Lycoming loss at Stevenson gives Widener a share of the MAC crown and a second-straight berth in the NCAA Tournament.
