WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Senior defensive back Mike Ward (Edgewater, Md./South River) was announced as a candidate for the National Football Foundation’s National Scholar-Athlete Awards, making him one of the semifinalists for the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments, the organization officially announced on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Ward is one of the top 20 tacklers in program history, entering this weekend with 210 career stops. The senior safety has led the Warriors in tackles in each of the last two years and again leads the team with 35 stops this year, as he is on pace to become the first Warrior to lead the team in tackles in three straight years since Bill Small did it from 1989-91. He leads the MAC with 7.0 solo tackles per game.

Ward has also added 27 passes defended, eight interceptions and six fumble recoveries in his career and he set a school record with a hand in a turnover in each of the first six games in 2016. In the classroom, Ward has earned Dean’s List honors once and he is a member of the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society. He has also volunteered for Favors Forward with the football team in each of the last three years.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 28th William V. Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 30, when they host Wilkes at David Person Field at 1 p.m. in Middle Atlantic Conference action.
