Lycoming Football - Warriors fall to a fired up Albright team

Sr WR Ryan Umpeby's 65 yard TD reception.
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Ryan Umpleby (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) caught four passes for a season-high 96 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown reception, but the Lycoming College football team fell to Albright College, 32-10, in Middle Atlantic Conference action at David Person Field on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Umpleby catch and run totaled a 95 yard day.

Junior Chase Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) completed 10-of-20 passing for 199 yards, tossing one touchdown and one interception, as the Warriors (1-3 overall, 1-2 MAC) were held under 100 yards rushing for the first time in 2015, posting 97 yards on 36 attempts.

Albright (3-0 overall, 2-0 MAC), which entered the game last in the MAC with 55 yards rushing per game, rushed for 201 yards, with Brian Wickkiser posting 26 carries for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Wickkiser also caught a five-yard touchdown.

The Warriors had two good chances to take an early lead, as freshman John Peters (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) intercepted a pass at the Albright 37-yard line on the first play from scrimmage in the game, but the Warriors drive stalled because of a personal foul penalty. Freshman Connor Bell(Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) dropped a punt in at the seven-yard line and Albright was able to get the ball only to the 29-yard line before they were forced to punt.

Lycoming got the ball at its own 36-yard line after a punt and embarked on an eight play drive, highlighted by a 35-yard pass to junior tight end Matt Adams (Erial, N.J./Erial) and a 21-yard pass to freshman Nick Costello (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) on fourth down to get the ball to the five-yard line. Two plays later, though, Albright recovered a fumble at the one-yard line.

The Lions then embarked on a 15-play, 99-yard drive, with Wickkiser running in the first score of the game from the 12-yard line. Lycoming responded with an 11-play, 63-yard drive, getting to the 12-yard line before sophomore Devon Flynn (Levittown, Pa./Conwell Egan Catholic) drilled a 29-yard field goal.

Albright took a 14-3 lead into halftime, though, as they went 50 yards on eight plays late in the half, with Wickkiser scoring on a five-yard pass from Mike Knight.

Lycoming responded early in the second half, with Whiteman finding Umpleby on a quick out before a block freed Umpleby for a 65-yard touchdown reception on the third play of the third quarter, helping Lycoming draw within four points.

After both teams stalled on two drives, an interception by Albright’s Steve Barrosso at the Lycoming 40-yard line set up a two-play drive, with Wickkiser scoring with 6:26 left in the quarter. Lycoming’s next drive stalled, giving Albright the ball at Lycoming’s 33-yard line and just two plays later, Wickkiser scored from six yards out. Sobelewski rounded out the scoring with a 50-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Knight finished 14-of-21 for 150 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Albright. Vinny Williams led the receivers with three catches for 51 yards.

Junior Blake Bowman (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) led Lycoming with 109 all-purpose yards, rushing for 39 yards on 13 carries, adding 18 receiving yards and 52 off kick returns. Senior Pat Whalen (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) caught two passes for 62 yards and Costello added three receptions for 37 yards.

Freshman Dominic Loffredo (Linden, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) led Lycoming with seven tackles and sophomore Johnathan Zedar (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) added five stops and two breakups. SeniorTyler O’Connell (Ogdensburg, N.J./Jefferson Township) posted a sack and senior Jon Rummel (Lykens, Pa./Williams Valley) added five tackles and 0.5 sacks.

Jamal Hayden led the Lion defense with six tackles and 1.5 sacks. Barrosso posted five stops, an interception and a breakup. Rich Kuhn had 1.5 sacks and Luiz Quinones added two breakups.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they head to Lebanon Valley for a 1 p.m. MAC contest.
