WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Cole Welham (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area) helped the Lycoming College football team to another solid defensive performance that included five sacks and 11 tackles for loss in a 28-13 win over King’s, helping Welham earn his first career Middle Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference office in Annville, Pa., announced on Sunday, Sept. 21.

Welham led the defensive line with his standout play on the corner on Saturday, as he got in on six tackles for a loss and three sacks. He actually was credited with two half-sacks in the game with seniorJimmy Nottingham (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) and two more of his 10 tackles in the game were made for no gain for King’s. He also got better as the game went along, making 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in the fourth quarter, which kept the Monarchs from seriously threatening a two-touchdown Warrior lead.

The junior is tied for the league lead with four sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss, as he has been critical in leading the 23rd-ranked Warriors to a 3-0 start. He is the first Warrior to notch three sacks in a game since Dwight Hentz had 3.5 against Widener in a 16-14 win in 2013.

Welham is the second Warrior to earn the MAC Defensive Player of the Week award this season, joiningMike Gentile (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), who had two interceptions against Albright on Sept. 13.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they head to Middle Atlantic Conference foe Wilkes for a 1 p.m. game.
